Lamb for Dogs: Energy-Rich, Gentle, and Not Always Novel

Allergies & Healing

Quick answer: Lamb is a good, energy-rich protein for dogs, but it's only a novel protein if your dog has never eaten it. Lamb was once the classic choice for allergic dogs, so it's now common in "sensitive" and lamb-and-rice kibbles. It also appears in published lists of dog food allergens and shares an allergen with beef. If your dog has never had lamb and isn't beef-allergic, it can be a great fit.

Ask around about "hypoallergenic dog food" and someone will mention lamb. That advice made sense years ago. Today it needs an update, and we'd rather tell you honestly than sell you the wrong protein.

Why lamb isn't always novel anymore

A novel protein works because your dog's immune system has never met it. Lamb used to fit that perfectly. Veterinary nutrition guides once listed it alongside rabbit and venison as a classic novel protein.

Then lamb became popular in pet food. Lamb-and-rice formulas are now common on shelves in the Philippines. Many dogs have already eaten lamb, sometimes for years.

The research reflects that. In published case reports, lamb was among the ingredients linked to food reactions in dogs, along with chicken, egg, and soy. Researchers have also found:

  • A lamb-specific allergen that some dogs react to
  • A muscle protein shared by beef and lamb that acts as an allergen. A dog allergic to beef may also react to lamb.

When lamb is a great choice

  • Your dog has never eaten lamb in any food or treat
  • Your dog isn't allergic to beef
  • Your dog is active or underweight and needs an energy-rich protein
  • You're past the elimination phase and want variety in rotation

When to pick something else

  • Your dog has eaten lamb-and-rice kibble or lamb treats
  • Your dog has a beef allergy
  • You need a very lean protein (try rabbit or crocodile)
  • You want the cleanest possible first trial (rabbit, crocodile, duck, or ostrich are more reliably novel)

Lamb nutrition at a glance

Gently Cooked Lamb Premium
Cut Boneless leg
Made from 100% muscle meat, fat trimmed by hand
Bone None
Fat level Moderate (richest of our gently cooked single proteins)
Prep Thaw and serve. Never re-cook or microwave.
Pack size 250g

We trim the fat by hand to keep it gentler on sensitive tummies. Even so, lamb is still our richest gently cooked single protein, so use it in moderation for weight-sensitive dogs.

How to feed lamb

  1. Check your dog's history. Look at past food and treat labels for lamb, lamb meal, or lamb fat.
  2. Switch over 7 to 10 days. 25%, 50%, 75%, then 100% lamb.
  3. Feed 2% to 3% of body weight daily, split into 2 meals. Indoor and less active dogs should lean toward 2%, since lamb is richer.
  4. For an elimination trial, feed lamb only for 6 to 12 weeks, with your vet's guidance.
  5. Rotate after the trial with other safe proteins and toppers.

Lamb isn't available as a meatball trial pack, so if you want a low-commitment taste test first, try one of our other novel proteins in meatball form.

Frequently asked questions

Is lamb good for dogs with allergies?

It can be, if your dog has never eaten lamb and isn't allergic to beef. Lamb is common in dog food, so it isn't novel for many dogs.

Is lamb hypoallergenic for dogs?

Not automatically. Lamb appears in published lists of dog food allergens. It's only "hypoallergenic" for a dog that has never eaten it.

Why doesn't lamb-and-rice kibble help my dog's allergies?

Your dog may already be sensitive to lamb, or the kibble may contain other proteins like chicken fat. Check every protein on the label.

Can dogs allergic to beef eat lamb?

It's best to avoid lamb in the first trial. Research has found an allergen shared by beef and lamb.

Is lamb fatty for dogs?

Lamb is richer than most proteins. We trim ours by hand, but it's still our richest gently cooked single protein, so feed it in moderation for weight-sensitive dogs.

Is lamb good for underweight dogs?

Often, yes. Its higher energy content makes it useful for active or underweight dogs, if it's a safe protein for them.
