familiar with fresh feeding? Jump straight to the questions below. 💚
Fresh food is real, whole-ingredient food — meat, organs, and clean add-ons
— with little to no processing.
At Wholesome Rabbit, we offer three formats:
🍲
Gently Cooked — Already cooked using sous vide (low heat, nutrients preserved). Just
thaw and serve. Zero prep, 100% wholesome.
🔪 Cookable — Bone-free raw packs you
prepare at home. Safe to cook any way you like.
🐇 Raw Feeding — Whole-prey raw
meals with ground bone. Must be served raw — never cook.
All three use real, recognisable
ingredients. No fillers, no artificial preservatives, nothing your dog doesn't need.
100% yes! 💚 Fresh food benefits every dog — not just sensitive
ones.
You don't need a sick dog to start feeding better. Better digestion, shinier coats, more
stable energy, and healthier skin — that's what wholesome feeding looks like for all dogs.
The key difference: bones.
Gently
Cooked — Bone-free. Already cooked using sous vide. Thaw and serve, zero prep. Best for:
first-timers, picky eaters, sensitive stomachs, busy fur-parents.
Cookable —
Bone-free. Raw packs you cook at home. Safe to boil, steam, sauté, any way you like.
✅ Both
Gently Cooked and Cookable contain NO bone — safe to cook and serve.
Raw
Feeding — Contains GROUND RAW BONE. Must always be served raw. Never cook.
⚠️ Bone
becomes brittle and dangerous when cooked — raw only, always.
Simple rule: Gently Cooked and
Cookable = bone-free, safe to cook or serve. Raw Feeding = contains bone, serve raw only.
Not
sure where to start? Gently Cooked is your easiest on-ramp.
Leanest:
🐇 Rabbit (Cookable or Gently Cooked) — very
lean, 84% muscle + organs.
🦅 Quail (Raw Ground Whole) — lean small-prey protein.
🐊 Crocodile
(Gently Cooked 250g) — lean, novel, great for highly sensitive dogs.
Medium
fat:
🦆 Duck (Cookable, skin-free) — lean to moderate, 100% deboned muscle.
🐃
Buffalo (Gently Cooked 500g) — ⚠️ Bovine family — dogs with beef allergies approach with
caution.
🐦 Ostrich (Gently Cooked 250g) — moderate-lean, novel.
🐐 Goat (Gently Cooked 250g) —
moderate fat, highly digestible.
Higher fat:
🦆 Duck (Raw Ground Whole) —
significantly higher fat due to 25% skin content.
🐑 Lamb (Cookable 500g) — energy-rich, 80% muscle
+ 20% fat.

The PDK is a bundle of 45g meatball trial packs — one per novel protein. Its
job: help your dog find their YES protein. This is Step 1 of the Wholesome Healing
System™.
After the PDK:
For dogs with allergies: buy 500g Single Protein
packs of the YES protein for Step 2 (elimination phase — minimum 6 weeks, ideally 8–12 weeks for skin
issues).
For healthy dogs: go straight to full packs for everyday feeding. No elimination
needed — just wholesome, varied, fresh food.
The PDK is your safest, lowest-commitment first
step.
Slowly! Their gut needs 7–10 days to adjust.
Days 1–3: 25% fresh +
75% current food
Days 4–6: 50% / 50%
Days 7–9: 75% fresh + 25% current food
Day 10+: 100%
fresh! 🎉
Tip: Add Bone Broth during transition. Some soft stool in the first few days is
normal. If it persists past Day 5, slow down and extend each phase.
Already feeding fresh or
raw? You can skip the transition and go straight to Step 1.
Start with 2–3% of body weight per day, split into 2 meals.
3kg →
60–90g/day | 5kg → 100–150g | 10kg → 200–300g | 15kg → 300–450g | 20kg → 400–600g | 30kg →
600–900g
Active dogs → 3%. Indoor/sedentary → 2%. Puppies → 4–8%, 3–4 meals/day. Seniors →
start at 2%.
Not sure? Send us your dog's weight and breed — we'll calculate it for you! 💬
Yes — when handled properly. Dogs are biologically built for it.
✅
Always thaw in the refrigerator — never on the counter
✅ Use separate prep surfaces
✅ Don't
leave food in the bowl for more than 30 minutes
✅ Never refreeze food that has fully
thawed
Not comfortable with raw? That's completely okay. Gently Cooked gives you all the same
real-food benefits with zero raw handling required.
It depends on how you're feeding.
Wholesome Mix Daily
Meals: formulated to support overall wellness — great everyday bowl
foundation.
Single proteins only (elimination phase): intentionally minimal for
medical clarity. Your vet may recommend supplements during this phase.
BARF or PMR
Mixes: rotation and variety tools, not standalone complete diets.
Toppers we love
for almost any bowl:
🦴 Bone Broth — gut health, joint support, hydration
🐟 Sardines / Mackerel
— omega-3s for skin, coat, and inflammation
🐐 Goat's Milk — natural probiotics and digestive
enzymes
Signs to watch for:
🔴 Constant itching — especially around face, paws,
ears, or belly
🔴 Recurring ear infections that keep coming back
🔴 Hot spots, skin redness, or
rashes that don't fully clear
🔴 Licking or chewing paws obsessively
🔴 Chronic loose stool,
gas, or inconsistent digestion
🔴 Dull, flaky, or thinning coat
🔴 Itchy skin + digestive
symptoms together — a strong signal
A vet visit is always the right first step. The most common
allergens in dogs are chicken, beef, and dairy. Novel proteins like rabbit, duck, goat, and crocodile
are far less likely to trigger a reaction.
Start with Gently Cooked Meatball Trial Packs or a bundle — the easiest,
most delicious introduction to fresh feeding. No prep, no guesswork, just thaw and serve.
Once
you're comfortable, explore raw formats, add toppers, or start rotating proteins.

Yes! Adding fresh food as a topper is a gentle, low-pressure way to start.
Many fur-parents naturally increase the fresh food ratio over time as they see results. There's no
right timeline — move at the pace that works for your dog and your life.
Yes! 🐶 With a couple of adjustments:
Feed more frequently — 3–4
times a day vs. twice for adults
Portions run slightly higher (4–8% body weight) to support
growth
For healthy puppies, Gently Cooked meals are a great starting point
If your puppy is
showing early signs of sensitivities, message us first. We'll build a plan that supports both growth
and health. 💚
Senior dogs often respond beautifully to fresh feeding — better
digestibility, less inflammation, and easier nutrient absorption.
Our top picks for
seniors:
🍲 Gently Cooked — easy on the stomach, zero prep
🦴 Bone Broth daily — joint support,
hydration, gut health
🐟 Wild-Caught Sardines or Mackerel — omega-3s for inflammation, coat, and
mobility
If your senior has specific health conditions, always check with your vet before
changing their diet. 🤍
A novel protein is simply a protein your dog has rarely or never eaten
before. Food allergies develop through repeated exposure — the immune system gradually becomes
sensitized to a protein it encounters over and over again.
Most commercial pet food uses
chicken, beef, or pork. Novel proteins like rabbit, duck, goat, crocodile, ostrich, and quail are
rarely found in commercial pet food — so most dogs have had little to no prior exposure. Less exposure
means a far lower chance of triggering an existing allergy.
This is why we specialize in novel
proteins, and why our elimination protocol uses only one novel protein at a time.
Might be food:
Symptoms happen year-round (not seasonal)
| Mainly affects ears, paws, belly, and face | Digestive symptoms too (loose stool, gas) | Itchy skin
+ GI issues together | Doesn't improve in different locations
Might be
environment:
Symptoms are seasonal | Usually just skin-related, no gut issues | Gets
better in a clean indoor environment
The most reliable way to rule out food: a proper
elimination diet — one novel protein, consistently, for a minimum of 6 weeks (ideally 8–12 weeks for
skin and coat issues).
Based on veterinary nutrition research, the most common food allergens in
dogs are:
🚩 Chicken (extremely common — found in almost every commercial formula)
🚩 Beef
🚩
Dairy products
🚩 Wheat and grains
During Discovery and Elimination Phase, avoid these
completely — including in treats, supplements, or anything flavoured.
⚠️ Note on Buffalo:
Buffalo is in the bovine family. Dogs with confirmed beef allergies should approach with caution or
consult your vet first.
Yes — our protocols are designed exactly for this.
A proper
elimination diet requires:
✅ One novel protein your dog has never eaten before
✅ Zero other
proteins during the trial (no treats, no table scraps, no flavoured supplements)
✅ A minimum of 6
weeks — ideally 8–12 weeks for skin and coat issues
✅ Consistency — even small amounts of the wrong
protein can reset progress
Our Step 2 Single-Protein Meals are built specifically for this
phase. We love working alongside vets. 💚
💩 Digestive symptoms (loose stool, gas) → often improve within 2–3
weeks
🐾 Itching and skin symptoms → typically 6–8 weeks to show real improvement
👂 Recurring
ear infections → can take 3–6 months to fully resolve
The most important thing: even the
smallest amount of the wrong protein can reset your progress — including treats, table scraps, or
flavoured supplements. Stay consistent.
Take weekly photos — the changes are often subtle until
you compare Week 1 to Week 8. 📸
Start with the Protein Discovery Kit and our Gently Cooked Meatball Trial
Packs (45g pouches).
Test one protein at a time. Feed each for 3–5 days. Observe: Is the
itching changing? Is their stool consistent? Is their energy stable?
Keep it simple: one
protein, no mixing, no treats. Once you've found a YES protein, move to Step 2 with a 500g Single
Protein pack — fed consistently for a minimum of 6 weeks.
👉
Start
with Protein Discovery
Technically, a dog can develop a reaction to any protein with enough
repeated exposure. But because novel proteins like rabbit, duck, goat, crocodile, and ostrich are
rarely found in commercial pet food, most dogs have had little to no prior exposure — meaning their
immune system hasn't had the chance to build a reaction.
That's exactly why we test multiple
novel proteins through the Discovery Phase — to find the ones your specific dog tolerates best. Every
dog is different, and we love helping you figure it out. 💚
Start with 2–3% of body weight per day, split into 2 meals.
3kg →
60–90g | 5kg → 100–150g | 10kg → 200–300g | 15kg → 300–450g | 20kg → 400–600g | 30kg →
600–900g
Active dogs → 3%. Indoor/sedentary → 2%. Puppies → 4–8%, split across 3–4 meals.
Seniors → start at 2%, adjust based on energy and weight.

During Discovery and Elimination Phase — no. One protein at a time is the
whole point. Mixing makes it impossible to know what's helping or causing a reaction.
Once
you've confirmed safe proteins and moved to Step 3 of the Wholesome Healing System™ — absolutely.
Protein rotation is encouraged for long-term variety and to reduce the risk of developing new
sensitivities.
BARF (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food): A mix of meat,
organs, bone, and vegetables. Our Cookable and Raw BARF Mixes follow this
approach.
PMR (Prey Model Raw): Designed to mimic whole prey — meat, bone, and
organ. Our Cat PMR Mixes follow this structure.
⚠️ Important: Our BARF and PMR mixes are not
claimed to be complete and nutritionally balanced meals. They are rotation and variety tools, designed
to support diversity over time alongside other proteins and toppers. Not sure how to combine them?

Sous vide is a gentle cooking method where food is vacuum-sealed and cooked
in a water bath at a precise low temperature. We call it Sous Smart™!
Gently Cooked meals are
already prepared. Just thaw and serve.
⚠️ Never re-cook Gently Cooked meals. The sous vide
process locks in moisture and nutrients. Recooking destroys those nutrients and changes the
texture.
⚠️ Never microwave.
Dogs' core nutritional needs are met by animal proteins and fats — they
don't have a strict biological requirement for carbs.
Some vegetables can add fibre and
micronutrients, and that's fine. Our BARF Mixes include vegetables for this reason.
During
elimination phase: keep the bowl clean. Protein only — no extras that could cloud your
results.
Safe dog-friendly vegetables to add later: broccoli, carrots, leafy greens. Always
avoid: onions, garlic, grapes, avocado.
🧊 Freeze immediately upon arrival — store at -18°C or below
❄️ Once
thawed: use within 2–3 days refrigerated
🚫 Never leave food out for more than 30
minutes
Shelf life:
Unopened and frozen: up to 6 months
Opened and
frozen: up to 1 month
Opened and refrigerated: 2–3 days
Option A — Feeding the whole pack: Place the sealed pack in
warm water (never scalding or boiling). Thaw until soft throughout. Serve
immediately.
Option B — Feeding part of the pack: Thaw overnight in the fridge
(4°C). Portion what you need. Keep unused portion refrigerated and use within 2–3 days.
⚠️
Never re-cook Gently Cooked meals.
⚠️ Never microwave.
Always thaw in the refrigerator overnight (4°C) — never at room temperature.
Serve cold, straight from the fridge. Most dogs love it!
⚠️ Never cook Raw Feeding meals. They
contain ground bone. Cooked bone becomes brittle and is dangerous for dogs.
Portion daily meals
and refreeze any unused portions as needed.
If partially thawed and still very cold: yes, safe to refreeze.
If
fully thawed at fridge temperature: use within 2–3 days — don't refreeze, to preserve
quality.
Never refreeze food that has been left at room temperature.
Yes! 🍽️ Our ingredients are human-grade and sourced from suppliers that
also serve restaurants. Standard safe food-handling applies — wash hands after handling raw formats,
use separate surfaces. Nothing scary here — it's just real food.
