Quick answer: A "sensitive stomach" usually means frequent loose stool, gas, or vomiting. Common causes include sudden food changes, rich or fatty meals, scavenging, food intolerance, and food allergy. Simple, easy-to-digest meals with one lean protein, gentle cooking, and a slow 7- to 10-day switch help most dogs. See a vet fast if there's blood, repeated vomiting, or low energy.
Some dogs can eat anything. Others get an upset tummy from a new treat. If your dog is in the second group, you're not imagining it, and you're not alone. Tummy trouble is one of the most common reasons fur-parents start looking at what's in the bowl.
Signs of a sensitive stomach
- Soft or loose stool more than once in a while
- Mucus on the stool, or a lot of straining
- Frequent gas or a gurgly belly
- Vomiting now and then, especially after new foods
- Pooping more often than usual
- Picky eating, or eating grass a lot
Common causes
| Cause | What happens | What helps |
|---|---|---|
| Sudden food change | The gut needs several days to adjust its digestive enzymes. Switching overnight often causes diarrhea. | A 7- to 10-day transition |
| Rich or fatty food | Some dogs can't handle much fat | Lean proteins like rabbit or crocodile |
| Food intolerance | Trouble digesting an ingredient, like lactose in milk | Find and skip the ingredient |
| Food allergy | The immune system reacts to a protein. Vomiting, diarrhea, and frequent pooping are common. | An elimination diet with a novel protein |
| Scavenging | Garbage, spoiled food, or table scraps | Keep bins closed, stop sharing scraps |
| Too many veggies or beans | Some dogs get gassy on high-fiber, plant-heavy homemade food | Meat-first meals |
| Parasites or infection | Worms and bugs cause loose stool | Vet check and deworming |
| Other illness | Pancreatitis, inflammatory bowel disease, and more | Vet diagnosis |
Is it food allergy?
Food allergy doesn't only show up in the skin. Vomiting and diarrhea are prominent signs of food allergy in the gut. The stool can be watery, mucus-covered, or occasionally bloody. Other signs include gas, belly discomfort, weight loss, and pooping more often.
Up to half of dogs with food-related skin problems also have tummy symptoms. So if your dog is itchy and has loose stool, food is a strong suspect. Read more in food allergy vs. food intolerance.
The good news: tummy symptoms often respond faster than skin. For gut problems, vets usually run an elimination diet for 2 to 4 weeks, compared with 6 to 12 weeks for skin.
What to feed a dog with a sensitive stomach
1. One simple protein
The fewer ingredients, the easier it is for your dog's gut, and the easier it is for you to spot a trigger. Start with one protein your dog hasn't reacted to before.
2. Lean over rich
For many sensitive tummies, lean protein is gentler. From leanest to richer, our proteins rank roughly like this:
| Leanest | Moderate | Richer |
|---|---|---|
| Rabbit, crocodile | Duck (skin off), ostrich, goat, buffalo | Lamb, raw duck ground whole (includes skin) |
3. Gently cooked
Gently cooked food is easy to digest and safe for dogs that shouldn't eat raw. Our meals are sous vide-cooked at low temperature, which keeps them moist and tender. Thaw and serve. No re-cooking.
4. Small, regular meals
Split the daily amount into 2 to 3 meals. Big meals can overwhelm a sensitive gut.
5. Fluids
Loose stool can dehydrate a dog. Plain bone broth, made without onion or seasoning, can make meals more tempting and add moisture.
6. A slow switch
Go from old food to new over 7 to 10 days. Some soft stool in the first few days is normal. If it lasts past Day 5, slow down. Our 7- to 10-day transition plan shows the exact ratios.
Gentle picks for sensitive tummies
Main meal: Gently Cooked Single Proteins. One human-grade protein per pack, sous vide-cooked and bone-free. Start with rabbit or crocodile if fat seems to upset your dog. Goat is another gentle choice.
Test before you commit: Gently Cooked Meatballs for Dogs. Single Protein Trial Packs (3 pieces) let you see how your dog's tummy handles a new protein before buying a full pack.
Hydration and appetite: Bone Broth. Water, raw meaty bones from one animal, and apple cider vinegar. No salt or seasoning. A splash over meals makes them more tempting. Pick the same protein as the main meal to keep things simple.
Gentle topper, once the tummy is settled: Goat's Milk. The raw version contains live cultures, and it has less lactose than cow's milk. It still has some lactose, so start with a teaspoon. Skip it if dairy upsets your dog.
When your dog is doing well, our Gently Cooked Wholesome Mix adds organs, veggies, and sardines for variety. It's best introduced slowly, and it isn't a standalone complete diet.

When to see a vet right away
Get help quickly if your dog has:
- Blood in the stool, or black, tarry stool
- Vomiting more than two or three times in a day, or vomiting with diarrhea
- A swollen, hard, or painful belly, or retching with nothing coming up (an emergency in large dogs)
- No interest in food for more than a day
- Weakness, low energy, or pale gums
- Diarrhea in a young puppy, a senior dog, or a dog with a health condition
- Loose stool lasting more than a few days, or weight loss
Ongoing tummy trouble should always get a vet check before a long diet trial. Parasites and other illnesses are easy to miss.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best food for a dog with a sensitive stomach?
Simple, easy-to-digest meals with one lean protein, few ingredients, and no sudden changes. Gently cooked single proteins are a good place to start.
Why does my dog have loose stool after a food change?
The gut needs several days to adjust its digestive enzymes to new food. A slow 7- to 10-day switch prevents most of this.
Is rice good for a dog's upset stomach?
Plain rice is easy to digest and often used short-term. For dogs with suspected food allergy, keep the diet to one protein and ask your vet before adding grains.
Can food allergies cause vomiting and diarrhea?
Yes. Vomiting, diarrhea, gas, and frequent pooping are common signs of food allergy in the gut, sometimes alongside itchy skin.
How long until a new diet settles my dog's stomach?
Many dogs improve within 2 to 4 weeks on a simple, consistent diet. Some feel better within days.
Is raw food OK for a sensitive stomach?
Some dogs do well on raw. For dogs with weak immune systems or ongoing gut illness, ask your vet first. Gently cooked is a safe, easy-to-digest option.
